In an era of rapid industrial and urban development in Japan, Kawase Hasui was famous for prints of serene landscapes and small villages.

His influential images emphasized the beauty of Japan’s rural countryside through the illumination of land and water by sun- and moonlight and the changing seasons. But it was his snow scenes—from softly falling snowflakes to brisk flurries—that earned him a reputation as the “Artist of Snow.”

The 1953 print Snow at Zojoji Temple was commissioned from Hasui and his printmaking partners by the Japanese government to recognize as an Intangible Cultural Treasure, and shortly before his death, Hasui himself was named a Living National Treasure.

Hasui Kawase (川瀬 巴水, Kawase Hasui; (May 18, 1883 – November 7, 1957)

A Japanese artist who was one of 20th century Japan's most important and prolific printmakers, Hasui designed his first falling snow print in 1920. His snow scenes are among the most original and best of his works.

He was a prominent designer of the shin-hanga ("new prints") movement, whose artists depicted traditional subjects with a style influenced by yōga (Western-style painting). Like many earlier ukiyo-e prints, Hasui's works were commonly landscapes, but displayed atmospheric effects and natural lighting

Hasui designed almost one thousand woodblock prints over a career that spanned nearly forty years.
