This work is also known as Brewing the Yangtze
It was painted during the year of the Dragon (2000) according to Chinese astrology.
At that time, work was being done to construct the Three Gorges Dam on the Yangtze River, and there was a flurry of protests due to environmental and humanitarian concerns.
The painting depicts a water dragon gazing into a crystal ball as if foretelling the future while the water churns below and threatens to breach the dam.
