Red House and Yellow Sleigh
Lawren S. Harris, a founding member of the Group of Seven and a pivotal figure in the history of Canadian art. He is perhaps most widely known from his bold, abstract landscapes.
Red House and Yellow Sleigh, shows a more intimate side of the artist’s work.
The scene is bright and homey, while offering a glimpse of a narrative.
Where is the person going in that horse-drawn sleigh?
The snow must have fallen recently, as it is piled on the doorsteps.
Why haven’t the people inside ventured out yet?
Maybe it’s just too cold.
Imagine your own story as you investigate Harris’s painting while piecing together this engaging puzzle.

Lawren S. Harris (Canadian, 1885–1970)
Harris was a leading member of the Group of Seven, once known as the Algonquin School, a group of Canadian landscape painters from 1920 to 1933, with "a like vision".
He saw art as a way to express spirituality.
From his early Impressionist works to his later abstracts, he used color and form to convey more than just a landscape.
